Why I Love Making Apple Waffles for Babies and Toddlers

Apple waffles have to be my favorite waffles to make for my kids.

Because we shop at Costco, we usually buy more apples than we know what to do with.

When my kids get sick of eating them, that’s when I use them to make interesting recipes like apple waffles, apple hand pies, and apple cinnamon-baked oatmeal bars.

If you go apple picking in the fall and can’t think of anything to do with those excess apples, then try my other apple recipes below.

Important Recipe Notes on Baby-led Weaning Apple Waffles

Do not use plain pancake mix to make these waffles

Pancake mix isn’t the same as waffle mix.

There are some pancake and waffle mix combos out there but they don’t work well for waffles without some alterations.

To make a good waffle batter, you need to increase the amount of fat content in the mix.

So if you’re going to use pancake mix for this recipe, you should still add all the wet ingredients I listed below.

Grated apples work better

I’ve found that grated apples work much better for this recipe.

That’s because it combines better with the batter and cooks more evenly.

You can get away with chopping the apples very small if you don’t have time to grate them. I do this sometimes.

If you do that, you may have to cook it a little longer to get it all cooked.

Let the waffles rest on a cooling rack before serving

One of the most important steps to making waffles is to let them rest after cooking.

This will allow the waffles to crisp up and not be soggy-looking. They need to let all the steam out that was trapped inside when cooking.

Don’t let them rest on a plate, because only the side facing the air will crisp up. The other side will be soggy.

The best way to rest waffles is to place them on a cooling rack like this one on Amazon.

Allergy Considerations

This recipe uses eggs

It’s important to note that this apple waffle recipe for babies and toddlers uses eggs to create the batter. If your baby is allergic to eggs, then you’ll need to use some other egg substitutes.

The best egg substitute for this waffle recipe would be banana, applesauce, or peanut butter.

See the table below for common egg substitutes to choose from. Make sure that you know the signs of an egg allergy so you know what to watch out for.

Egg SubstitutesNumber of “eggs” Made
3 tbsp peanut butter1 egg
1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water1 egg (whisk until gelatinous)
1/2 mashed banana1 egg
1 tbsp mashed sweet potato1 egg
1/4 cup applesauce1 egg
1 tbsp chia seed + 3 tbsp water1 egg (stir & rest it for 15-30 min)
1 tbsp soy protein + 3 tbsp water1 egg (mix & use immediately)

This recipe uses milk

Milk is another common allergen in babies and toddlers. If your baby is allergic to milk, then you can use other milk alternatives like soy or almond milk.

If your baby is lactose intolerant, then you can choose to use Lactaid milk as an alternative.

Ingredients For BLW Apple Waffles

Apples – make sure you grate them or chop them very small so they cook more evenly.

Flour – you can choose to use whole wheat or all-purpose flour. I always use a mix of both when I can.

Baking soda – helps the waffles to rise.

Eggs – eggs add to the fat content of the waffles and make the batter richer. Don’t omit this step. If you don’t want eggs, use a substitute like peanut butter instead

Milk – helps to make the batter richer in texture. Don’t skip this step. You can use oat milk or other milk alternatives instead.

Canola Oil – also helps make the batter thick in texture. Some people prefer melted butter but I use oil because it’s less work with the same results.

Maple syrup – this is optional. You can make the pancake as is or use brown sugar instead of maple syrup to make it sweeter.

Vanilla and cinnamon – helps to add some fall flavors to the waffles.

What To Serve With Apple Waffles For Baby

Serve with Jam or syrup

Waffles go very well with jam or syrup. My favorite jam to serve with it is strawberry jam or apple butter.

You could also make homemade marmalade yourself to go with it.

Serve with mashed berries

If you’re worried about the sugar content in maple syrup, jams, or marmalades, then consider making your own.

You can make your own “jam” by mashing or pureeing some berries to pour over the waffles for your baby.

How To Cut Apple Waffles For Baby-led Weaning

6-9 Months old

For babies between 6 and 9 months, you should cut the waffles into strips to enable them to grasp it better.

9 -12 months old

For babies between 9 and 12 months old, you can cut the waffles into chunky squares to encourage your baby to use their pincer grasp.

12- 24 months and older

Your toddler between 12 and 24 months can continue to eat apple waffles chopped into small squares.

Apple Waffles For Baby Storage Tips

Can I refrigerate baby-friendly Apple waffles?

Yes, you can refrigerate these baby-friendly Apple waffles. They will last for up to a day in the fridge. Just note that it will get soggier the longer it stays in the fridge. For best results, store them in a ziplock bag or Pyrex container.

Can I freeze these toddler-friendly apple waffles?

The best way to store these toddler-friendly apple waffles is to freeze them for later use. I freeze mine by storing them in a ziplock bag. They will last for months in the freezer.

Reheating BLW Apple Waffles

Microwave

To reheat these apple waffles, just pop them in the microwave for 1 minute or until they’re hot. Then allow them to cool on a cooling rack before serving.

Cooling them first prevents them from getting mushy since you’re heating them from frozen.

Toaster

You can also pop these apple waffles in the toaster to heat them. Note that this option takes longer and may make your waffles extra crispy.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.
