Cut loose!

Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael, the two members of the Bacon Brothers band, took to the stage at Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Calif., on April 27. And as part of their set, they sang one of the songs Kevin is most associated with: “Footloose.”

In footage of their performance that Stagecoach posted on TikTok, Kevin, 66, sings lead vocals and plays tambourine, while his brother plays along on guitar. They’re accompanied by other musicians on stage.

The song “Footloose” was co-written by singer Kenny Loggins and Dean Pitchford for the movie of the same name; Pitchford also wrote the movie’s screenplay. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984, and was Loggins’ only No. 1 hit. In the film, Kevin’s character — Chicago-born bad boy Ren McCormack — memorably dances to the song in a warehouse, though a different song was actually used on set.

In the film, Kevin's Ren moves to a small town where dancing has been banned by a local minister (played by John Lithgow). Ren falls in love with the minister's daughter, Ariel (Lori Singer), and the duo eventually get the dance ban lifted and celebrate at their senior prom.

“It was a tiny movie. and we had no idea that it would last for 40 years and continue to be a cultural touchstone," Pitchford told PEOPLE in 2024. "It gets referenced whenever there is a ban on dancing. It gets referenced whenever there are books being burned. It's continued to somehow be relevant, and I'm very, very happy about that."

Kevin added that he had no clue the movie would impact culture on such a wide level. "I figured the song would have a lasting legacy, but the movie … I mean, I like the movie. I think it’s cool, but how can you predict that?" he said.

The Footloose soundtrack also featured hit songs "Let's Hear It for the Boy,” performed by Deniece Williams, and “Holding Out for a Hero,” performed by Bonnie Tyler. The former hit No. 1 on the Hot 100, while the latter was a Top 40 hit. "Almost Paradise ... Love Theme from Footloose,” a duet sung by Mike Reno of Loverboy and Ann Wilson of Heart, reached No. 7 on the Hot 100. The soundtrack itself also reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

As for the Bacon Brothers, Kevin and Michael, 75, have been making music and performing together for more than 30 years. They describe their sound as a “mix of folk, rock, soul, and country music” on their website. They’ve released 12 albums, including 2024’s Ballad of the Brothers.

Kevin has also mixed his musical skills with his acting work in recent years. In 2022’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (in which he played himself), he sang and played guitar along with the band the Old 97's.

This April, he stars in Prime Video’s The Bondsman, alongside singer Jennifer Nettles, which lets both of them flex their musical talents, and he told PEOPLE that they co-wrote music for the show.

"I have been writing songs since I was 12, and I've written a lot of songs and my brother and I have written a lot of songs together with The Bacon Brothers, and we've also more recently actually got the chance to partner with some great songwriters," Kevin explained.

"Jen comes from that tradition in country music where a lot of people write songs, and so it was very comfortable right away. We just had a very good musical songwriting connection right away,” he said. Kevin also performed with Nettles at Stagecoach over the weekend.
