Is it okay to cross reference spark plugs? ›

The spark plug Cross References are for general reference only. Check for correct application and spec/measurements. Any use of this cross reference is done at the installers risk.

Screwing up the plug wire order would cause cylinder misfires, and the unburned fuel usually flow out to exhaust and potentially damage the O2 sensors and Cat – but should not happen with only few seconds of cranking the engine.

This spacing is pivotal, dictating the spark intensity, which is crucial for efficient combustion. Vehicle manuals provide the ideal gap, which usually ranges between 0.028″ and 0.060″. Replacement spark plugs must be the same size as the original (same hex size, diameter, thread pitch and length), and have a similar “heat range” (hot enough to resist fouling when the plug is cold, and cool enough to resist pre-ignition when the plug is hot).

Finding the Proper Gap Setting

The gap setting is different for each vehicle but most are somewhere between 0.028" and . 060". Consult the owner's manual or Champion ^® catalog to find the recommended setting for the vehicle you're working on.

What is even more imperative than matching cable length is that you do not mix up the order of the spark plug wires. Improper installation of these wires can result in poor combustion or misfiring of the cylinder, which will cause drivability issues and potentially severe damage to the engine.

As long as the spark plugs and wires are good not a problem for the wires to touch. They don't fire at the same time and the distance between wires is always more than the spark plug gap.

There are all kinds of things that can go wrong… The wrong plug could be installed. If the electrode protrudes too far, it can strike the piston. If it's too short, it can cause misfires.

The difference in Bosch spark plugs is that the gap between the electrodes is 0,7 mm (not 0,8 mm like in NGK) and I think Bosch spark plugs is a bit hotter than NGK (VAR6SIP Bosch vs SILZKAR7E8S NGK). 7 heat range for NGK is like 5 for Bosch, so NGK spark plugs is a bit colder.

Many think the larger the gap, the better. However, if the gap is too large, and the ignition system can't provide the voltage needed to spark across the gap, or turbulence in the combustion chamber blows out the spark, misfires will occur.

While most NGK spark plugs are pre-gapped, there are occasions when the gap requires adjustment. Care must be taken to avoid bending or breaking off the fine-wire electrodes. NGK recommends a round wire-style or pin gauge gap tool to measure the gap.

There are huge differences between spark plugs depending on the engine type. This includes the number needed, the type of core used in the center of the wire, materials used for construction, boot angles, boot types (on both ends), diameter, and length. Modern vehicles sometimes do not use traditional spark plug wires.

Misfiring due to excessive heat, quenching, increased fuel consumption and even engine failure can occur from the use of incorrect or mismatched spark plugs, so it's best to replace all of your spark plugs at the same time, and with the correct type of spark plug, to ensure smooth and consistent operation.

Spark plugs fire in a specific order, and crossing a wire to the wrong plug will make the engine run rough or not at all and can cause damage to your engine.
