Y/B fare question
I recently booked a unrestricted fare, B class, and was given the complimentary upgrade during booking. I booked the trip unrestricted for the fact that I will most likely have to change the return flight. Now when I go to check for changing that flight even to economy there is a cost, obviously higher for first class.... is there any way to un-upgrade the return flight or did I make a mistake in taking the upgrade during booking? Has anyone else tried this?

Ah, I didn't want to bring up that possibility - not all B's are unrestricted.

When doing the booking I didn't search by fare class, I clicked on unrestricted fare. The fare class showed up as B... when I did a search using b class only the flight was the same price but Y was close to double the cost... is there any place on the booking online that it shows unrestricted fare? On the receipt under fare rules it only lists -refundable-.

Is your whole ticket booked in B or just the return? Unfortunately if you have a mixed fare basis ticket the lowest (most restrictive) fare basis rules govern the whole ticket when it comes to changes.

The whole ticket was booked in B, just was not sure if taking the complimentary upgrade changed the fare codes as it is now listed as PN now instead of B.

I also have a question on Y/B fares. I booked B-class flight for 3/28 as a non-premier member and currently have a regular Economy seat. I will become Premier Silver on 3/17. After my status is updated, will I be able upgrade to First class or no, since I booked as non-premier? If yes, do I upgrade through the united.com seat selection site?

Have you started travel on the ticket yet (I.e. Flown at least the first segment)? If not then a change will default to refunding the ticket and issuing a new ticket which can have higher or lower fares (even in the same fare basis). If you have started travel and there is no penalty for changing flights after travel has started in the fare rules then the charge is a mistake and you need to call in. Note some fares allow you to refund before departure but still charge a fee to refund.

I have not started travel... so that may be the issue. I am 99% sure that I will have to change the return flight, which will be next week. I will have to look at that point and see if there is still a cost to change at that point.

It would still be a good idea to check the fare rules on that return flight just to confirm there will be no charge to change when its time to make the change.

Yes, if there is availability to upgrade.

Following the conclusion of my flights I can update what happened. I had a B class fare upgraded instantly and had to change my return date, when I did that the cost of that fare was applied to my new flight. I actually was able to fly in A with a refund, since the A class fare was less than B for the return as I now knew my new return date. It is nice to know that this option works well, although I had to call to get the change made as the website would not process the change.

I am a bit late here, but sometimes B is no longer available when you go to make the change, so it wants more money to put you in Y.
